Town environmental staff updated the Board of Health on ongoing preparations for demolition at 100 West Street, now owned by Greystar, and described controls for asbestos removal and pest monitoring.
Sai told the board Greystar plans to demolish the building in three or four sections to meet MBTA scheduling constraints. Two small areas of the building contain asbestos (the roof being the largest area); contractors will remove asbestos by section, place the material into sealed trailers on site and then remove those trailers to an appropriate disposal facility once demolition is complete. "It's sealed up," staff said when asked whether the asbestos trailers would be secured and labeled as hazardous material.
Staff also addressed neighbor concerns about rodents. Environmental staff reported weekly monitoring by a pest-control company, set bait boxes and snap traps around the building perimeter and had two outside captures so far. Sai said the office has been receiving resident complaints from the Needham Heights area and is responding as they arise.
Board members asked whether demolition would occur at night and whether MBTA schedule changes would be required; staff said demolition will be performed during daytime hours on one or two prearranged days when MBTA service is paused for that segment. Staff said they will notify relevant town departments and coordinate public notice to minimize surprises for commuters and nearby residents.
The board requested continued timely updates and confirmed that staff will review paperwork and clear each demolition section before work proceeds.
