Stamford seeks $220,000 for Old Long Ridge bridge design after state-local bridge program approval

City Engineer Lou Casalow asked the Stamford City Planning Board on Aug. 8 to authorize $220,000 for design engineering for a bridge replacement on Old Long Ridge Road, north of LaRocca and south of Hunting Ridge Road.
Casalow told the board the existing structure dates to 1940, is a short 14-foot span and shows signs of structural deterioration — including exposed reinforcing steel and localized sinkhole development — prompting the recommendation for complete replacement. He said he submitted a grant application in May and the state-local bridge program issued a positive response on June 26.
The city’s share will be 50% of the design and project costs and Casalow noted there are hydraulic and downstream impacts that limit some remedy options (for example, raising the bridge could increase downstream impacts and require changes to adjacent private-property grades). He said staff will perform hydraulic modeling and consider downstream consequences as part of design.
Board members asked questions about hydraulic considerations and the limits of feasible solutions. Casalow said the engineering team will evaluate alternatives during the design phase and pursue any hydraulic improvements only where appropriate given downstream and property constraints.
The board approved the $220,000 authorization by voice vote and carried the motion unanimously. The design authorization clears the way to proceed with engineering and subsequent procurement steps.
