Yavapai County declares Cybersecurity Awareness Month; ITS to publish safety resources

The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and asked staff to continue public education efforts.
Jared Phelan, chief information officer, introduced Anthony Nixon, the county’s cybersecurity manager, who told the board that county systems face thousands of attempted attacks on a daily basis. "These attacks range from denial of service attacks on our public facing websites... to advanced phishing and malware attacks," Nixon said, stressing that cybersecurity affects public services as well as personal data.
Nixon said the county will publish practical guidance on the county website during October — materials that will cover identifying suspicious emails, physical security tied to digital risks, and tips for secure use of common technologies. "These documents will be made publicly available to all who wish to enrich their knowledge on digital safety," he said.
The board approved the proclamation and scheduled a brief photo opportunity following the vote.
