The Bay Park Recreation Commission voted to implement a pilot yoga program at the Depoe Bay Community Center and to guarantee up to $50 per class while enrollment grows, the commission decided during its meeting.
Loretta, a commission member who introduced the idea, said she and a city council representative had discussed partnering with established instructors and that organizers see demand for both chair and floor yoga. Commission members cited examples from Lincoln City’s cultural center, where a yoga coordinator arranges instructors and supplies mats or blankets for classes.
"If we could guarantee, at least initially, to see if it works…we would provide $50," a presenter said, describing the proposed subsidy that would make it feasible for an instructor to trial classes until attendance covers costs. Commissioners discussed a practical minimum enrollment (a 10-person target was mentioned) and suggested piloting two classes while surveying the community about preferred times.
Commissioners agreed the program would need city council approval before the commission could allocate budget dollars. A motion to implement yoga at the community center and to subsidize classes with a $50 guarantee was made and put to a verbal vote; members answered "Aye" and the motion carried. The commission plans to present the approved plan to City Council in January for formal budget authorization.
In discussion members emphasized low-cost startup options: asking participants to bring their own mats, using chairs already in the hall for chair yoga, or having instructors bring modest shared equipment while demand is tested. The commission also discussed recruiting instructors (references were made to Melissa and to a manager identified as Britney Jan Jansen in Lincoln City who coordinates multiple instructors).
Next steps: the commission will select tentative days and times, survey local interest, coordinate with staff and instructors about availability and then present the subsidy request and program outline to City Council for approval.
