Southern Oregon Career Center outlines medical, behavioral health and EMS programs

Capener said the career center launched a medical assisting program in September that will run for juniors and seniors, delivering three certificates (medical assisting, phlebotomy, patient service representative) and preparing students to sit for a national health exam after two years. He described partnerships with local health providers (Rogue Immediate Care, Providence, La Clinica, Asante, Rogue Community Health) and with Jackson County Health and Human Services, Jackson Care Connect and AllCare for a behavioral health program that will produce a QMHA-R certificate.
The ESD is also developing an emergency-services program with Mercy Flights, local fire departments and Rogue Community College to help students earn EMT certification out of high school. Capener said classroom space is currently donated by local partners while the school's leadership seeks to acquire a building in the Medford area and intends to expand into trade programs such as aviation mechanics and manufacturing.
Capener invited councilors to a Nov. 15 fundraiser at Relic Winery to support an EMS lab. He said the center serves students from across the county, including Ashland, Prospect, Rogue River, Armadillo Charter and Medford.
