Los Alamos staff report: 55 DWIs and 112 reportable cases in last year; men account for nearly 80%

Lauren Smith, the incoming staff member replacing Sarah, presented year‑end figures for Los Alamos and LANL reportables and workplace testing.
"For the year, the grand total was 55 DWIs," Lauren said, and she added the program recorded 112 reportable cases in 2025. Lauren said 18 people entered alcohol treatment, two incidents involved domestic violence where alcohol was a factor, and two others were general battery cases with alcohol involved. She also reported 12 positive workplace tests and a gender distribution of 89 males (about 79 percent) and 23 females.
Council members discussed the caseload and its implications for treatment referrals. Monica, the law enforcement representative, reported low filing volume for December but maintained active magistrate and municipal caseloads; the council noted that DWI continues to represent almost half of overall referrals.
Lauren and others said the 2025 total (112 cases) was slightly down from 2024 (114 cases), but the percentage of male cases remained high. "Still vast majority were males...79% were men in 2024," Lauren said.
The council did not take further formal action on these statistics during the meeting; staff said they will continue to track cases and coordinate referrals to treatment providers.
