Chair delivers state‑of‑the‑county report; council elects new chair and vice chair

Chair Cole delivered the county’s annual state‑of‑the‑county summary at the Jan. 6 meeting, reviewing key accomplishments and challenges from 2025: broadband planning and a council‑approved $40 million bond for a community fiber project; several housing approvals including 87 deed‑restricted studio apartments on 9th Street and a mixed‑use development projected to bring about 285 market‑rate units and 25,000 square feet of retail; and a projected 14% drop in gross receipts tax revenue for FY 2025 tied to changes at the county’s largest employer.

Cole said council had adopted budget guidance for FY27 with a conservative approach to reflect uncertainty in gross receipts taxes, instructed departments to hold flat budgets where possible, and guided a 10% reduction in non‑labor budget categories to balance cost increases.

Later in the meeting, council conducted its customary start‑of‑year elections. Councilor Herman nominated Councilor Reedy for chair; Reedy accepted and was elected by roll call 7‑0. Councilor Neil Clinton nominated Ren Herman for vice chair; Herman was elected 7‑0. Both positions take effect at adjournment.

Other short items included an introduction of new Fire Chief Eric Litzenberg and public comments (including a petition from Morris Pongratz urging medical malpractice reform). The meeting adjourned after routine liaison reports.
