Council approves loan package to help local startup Ubiquiti expand

Hunter McDaniel, identified as Ubiquiti’s CEO, said the company was founded in 2014 out of Los Alamos National Laboratory and has grown from around 10 employees in 2017 to about 44 today, with roughly 40 working in Los Alamos County. McDaniel described a plan to buy an adjacent building to expand R&D and prototyping capacity; he said the purchase price is $1,000,000 and that a county loan of $800,000 would be secured by a lien on the property. He said the company expects to add about 10 jobs across 2026 and 2027 and estimated a three‑year economic benefit of roughly $4,000,000 in salaries, taxes and improvements.
Sandy Jones, director of the Chamber of Commerce, offered the chamber’s strong support for the LITA loan and highlighted Ubiquiti’s local investments and community sponsorships.
McDaniel said the company has been meeting prior loan obligations and expects to complete payments on the previous participation agreement; he estimated an outstanding balance around $75,000–$80,000. Council discussion focused on retention of local jobs and the company’s long‑term investment in county facilities.
Councilor Veil Clinton moved to adopt Ordinance No. 752; the motion was seconded and passed 6‑0 by roll call.
Next steps: staff will publish the ordinance summary as required by county charter and continue implementing the participation agreement with Ubiquiti.
