Los Alamos County Council authorized a budget revision on Dec. 16 to pursue procurement of a consolidated camera and records platform for the police department, including body‑worn cameras, in‑car cameras, interview‑room recording, license‑plate readers and cloud storage with redaction and translation features.
Chief Scambellone said the system's AI capabilities—particularly automated redaction—would sharply reduce staff time spent responding to Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) requests. He said the department currently manages multiple vendor contracts and that moving to a single platform could, after a transition period, eliminate duplicate contract costs.
The chief also cited potential officer‑safety and operational benefits: the system described by staff includes real‑time translation of spoken interactions and analytical tools that can support investigations. Councilors asked about grant or self‑insured fund reimbursement opportunities; the chief said he would pursue eligible grant sources and that vendor choice would not affect eligibility for reimbursement.
Council approved the budget revision to allow negotiations and future contract action; the council did not award a contract at this meeting and the department will return with procurement specifics.
