Planning council discusses expanding DWI prevention: school lessons, webinars and teen events

Council members updated the planning council on ongoing DWI prevention work and discussed steps to expand outreach in schools and the community.
Sylvia reported that she, Juanita, Sarah and Christine taught driver-education sessions and said the lessons “went great,” recommending expanding lessons to reach younger students and broader substance-use prevention beyond tobacco. She told the group that an application decision is expected in January for CRAN or similar funds to support student interns and broaden messages in high schools and middle schools.
Members discussed webinars for parents and noted the council can reuse recorded content on social media and in newsletters to extend reach. Rachel described teen-focused prevention events — movie nights that draw 20–50 attendees and a free virtual-reality slot on the second Saturday of every month — and said the council is exploring sponsorships to provide free food and increase attendance.
Eli and others suggested pre-party activities tied to movie themes at the teen centers to boost participation. Members also discussed coordinating with school administrators to plan events earlier in the school calendar rather than scrambling close to prom or other events.
Next steps: staff will follow up with school administrators and potential funders and report back at the next meeting; members expect grant decisions in January.
