The committee approved a $30,000 transfer from the district's operating budget to cover additional feasibility and schematic-design costs for the Margaret E. Peaslee School project on Dec. 3.
Becky, chair of the Peaslee Building Committee, told the committee Flansburg Architects was selected as the designer but combined designer and OPM contracts exceeded the $900,000 appropriation by about $30,000. She and other administrators said they negotiated savings (including a reduced PMA/OPM contract), identified small environmental-testing savings and proposed using operational funds to cover the shortfall so the project can proceed to MSBA submission. The motion to add $30,000 to the feasibility allocation (increasing the total to $930,000) passed unanimously.
Separately, staff updated the committee on the Z-school roof project. The roof shows signs of drainage issues and localized failures; architects and the OPM are finalizing cost estimates and structural investigations, including hazmat testing, and the project has qualified for MSBA accelerated repair funding. Administrators noted the district's approximate MSBA reimbursement rate (about 48% for Northborough) and said further meetings will be scheduled to review the MSBA submission and cost details.
The Peaslee building committee said the feasibility/schematic work timeline is roughly 18 months and that a special-meeting window may be needed to approve MSBA submission materials before next deadlines.
