Committee favors building-compatible sign design, opts for A2 with white lettering

Architectural staff presented the original bid-panel design (which had included an LED message board that zoning denied) and showed alternatives that align with the Town of Northborough’s municipal sign standards (which emphasize carved lettering and a white background with the town seal). Committee members debated whether to keep the fire department patch or use the town seal, the appropriate panel color to complement the brick, and whether white lettering would be more legible from a distance.
Several committee members said preserving the sign vocabulary of the building was important. One member said a building-compatible sign that uses white lettering would be both readable and consistent with the architecture. The motion to support A2 with white lettering and the correct street number was moved and seconded and carried by voice vote.
Staff noted that the final sign will require a file from the department for the patch or seal and that the contractor will fabricate the cast-aluminum plaque per the selected design. The committee authorized staff to proceed with the chosen panel option and to coordinate final details with the vendor.
