Committee members said the main survey had received 179 responses so far, short of an internal outreach goal. "We were hoping for, at least 400," Speaker 2 said, summarizing the shortfall. A follow-up question about seven specific artworks had 73 responses and a final recognition question had 53 responses.
Survey tallies reported by staff showed nature and environment as the top theme (115 votes), functional art and murals ranking high for funding priorities, and whimsical or playful themes receiving 68 votes. Speaker 2 said the county and a newspaper item helped boost responses and suggested reaching out to the laboratory and local schools to increase participation.
Members discussed using the survey and the committee’s art archive to address common public concerns—chiefly how to find and interpret public artworks. Speaker 2 said comments show a split in public attitudes, from "We shouldn't spend our tax money. Art has no purpose" to detailed, thoughtful suggestions, and recommended combining survey input with maintenance data to create priorities for commissioning, conserving and signage.
The committee agreed to fold the survey results into the strategic-plan draft and asked members to return edits on the work plan. Staff will incorporate the data ahead of upcoming meetings and the committee plans further outreach to boost response counts.
