Charles City County supervisors voted on Dec. 18 to approve a resolution waiving penalty and interest for property-tax payments impacted by a recent closure window, citing staff recommendation and authority under the Virginia Code.
County counsel and staff referenced Virginia Code provisions that permit governing bodies to waive penalties or provide reasonable extensions for good cause; the board discussed using that authority for residents affected by inclement weather who missed a due date and whether the same approach could apply to taxpayers who received inaccurate bills.
Supervisor Ryan Patterson urged staff to examine whether penalties could be waived on a case-by-case basis for those who were sent incorrect bills, and staff (Mr. Bosch) said they would investigate the scale and logistics of such an approach and report back. The board’s motion specified impacted taxpayers who made payments in person, by dropbox, online or by postmark by Dec. 10, 2025.
The resolution passed by recorded ayes from the members present.
