Regional board advances maternal and child health programming and seeks intern projects

Members of the Greater Burrows Partnership for Health advisory board discussed plans to expand maternal and child health programming and to host interns to support that work.
Mikayla Petty said one goal is ‘‘establishing local partners’’ and noted existing connections with community centers and local providers; the board discussed outreach to pediatric offices, daycares, WIC and library/rec departments as distribution points for education and programming. Petty described planned events including a breastfeeding workshop in February and a public-health lecture for pregnant and postpartum women on March 5 in Westborough.
The board also discussed the DPH local public health internship: Petty said the application opened this week and is due Feb. 6; the internship runs 160 hours from May 27 to Aug. 12 and the program prefers some in-person time. Members suggested project ideas such as compiling a provider inventory, mapping existing maternal-child programs, or analyzing chronic-disease data to free staff capacity. Petty and Chair Isabella Crusoe agreed to draft an application aligned to the region’s needs and to refine scope once a student match is made.
Board members encouraged using existing models—Community Baby Showers, Healthy Parent Happy Baby and virtual postpartum support groups—rather than duplicating efforts. Petty said she will research local models and return with suggested programming and provider lists at the March meeting.
