The Town of Northborough police chief told the Traffic Safety Committee on Jan. 13 that Amazon officials have agreed to purchase and install signs at a Bartlett Street location where tractor units have been parking, a move the chief said should help enforcement.
"They've offered to purchase the things and install the signs, and we'll gladly take them up on it," the chief said, adding that installation will wait until the ground thaws. The chief said the town demonstrated to Amazon exactly where it wants the signs and that Amazon has been cooperative.
The chief described the stretch of roadway as roughly 75 yards long where parking occurs and estimated it could accommodate up to eight tractors at a time. He said the trucks are parking in a muddy area opposite the Amazon entrance and that the absence of signage has made enforcement difficult.
The chief also reported that the FedEx facility next door is reconfiguring its driveway, a change he said may make left turns out of that property harder and could encourage drivers to turn right toward the highway instead of into downtown and Church Street.
The chief said the town will watch whether the signs and the FedEx driveway changes alleviate the problem and noted the possibility of additional physical measures such as placing logs if signage proves insufficient.
