The Town of Northborough Traffic Safety Committee reported Jan. 13 that the Select Board agreed with its recommendations to change speed limits on Crawford Street and Church Street and directed staff to proceed with signage and monitoring.
Committee member Bill said the Select Board supported the committee's recommendations on both citizen requests and that the process will move forward: signs will be ordered, new speed-limit signs will be posted and temporary warning signage will be installed to notify drivers of the change. The committee also recommended installing flashing signs in the areas and asked staff or the police department to consider those devices.
A committee member described plans to deploy portable traffic monitors to collect baseline and post-installation speed and volume data; the committee discussed running monitors for two weeks in each direction and then comparing data after signs are installed. The committee intends to repeat data collection for a longer period—about a month—after the new signs are in place.
The committee did not report any legal obstacles to the changes; implementation depends on sign ordering and site preparation and is expected to proceed in the coming months.
