Board authorizes continued engagement of outside counsel on county landfill

On a motion by Vice Chairman Ryan Patterson, the Charles City County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve a resolution authorizing the county to seek outside legal services related to the county landfill.
Patterson told the board that the firm listed in the packet has been working on behalf of the county since May 2025 to "unpack or unravel any issues" related to compensation the county should receive under its landfill agreement. Several board members asked for confirmation that the engagement was properly documented; staff said the firm had been engaged and that any settlements or outstanding items would be brought back to the board.
The vote recorded unanimous ayes from Patterson, Michael Hill and Chairman Byron Atkins. Counsel noted that county staff assigned to the matter were conflicted out of the representation and that the action before the board was to formally authorize continued engagement and documentation of that representation.
Next steps: Staff will report back to the board with any agreements or status updates; a follow-up task was requested to bring information on any required county actions and to confirm whether prior judgments or town decisions could be affected by the engagement.
