Committee recommends removal of five Tankard parcels from AFD to allow subdivision

The Accomack County Agricultural and Forestal District Committee recommended removal of five parcels owned in part by Suzanne Tankard from the Pungateague Agricultural and Forestal District to allow subdivision and potential sale. Cindy Jones, Code Enforcement Officer for Zoning, opened the public hearing and read relevant AFD ordinance provisions governing withdrawal and subdivision.
Jones told the committee the parcels (tax maps 92-a-95b, 92-a-95b2, 92-a-95b3, 92-a-95b4 and 92-a-95c) total approximately 35.24 acres and are zoned residential. In staff findings, Jones recommended approval "given the proximity to an incorporated town and the properties being residentially zoned." Public commenters and at least one supervisor expressed no objection; a public commenter said they were familiar with the property and supported its reuse for residential purposes.
After discussion about how AFD status affects subdivision and tax breaks for farmland landlords, a committee member moved that the committee recommend removal of the listed parcels from the Pungateague AFD. A second was recorded and the committee carried the motion by voice vote. The recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors for final action under the county’s process for AFD withdrawals.
The committee record includes Jones’s reading of AFD ordinance Sections 11 and 15 and a Virginia statutory citation provided in the hearing record. Jones said staff can answer follow-up questions and that applicants were present at the meeting.
