C. Renita Major was elected chair of the Accomack County Board of Supervisors for calendar year 2026 on Jan. 7 after Supervisor Hart nominated her and the board closed nominations and voted in favor. The presiding officer announced the result as unanimous.
Vanessa Johnson was nominated and elected vice chair in the same organizational process. Members offered congratulations at the close of the vote.
In brief remarks after her election, Major thanked the board, reflected on the "year of the woman," recalled previous women who served locally and urged members to maintain respectful tone when they disagree. A board member described the leadership results as historically significant, saying it was the first time in the county's history to have women as both chair and vice chair and the first time to have two African American chair/vice-chair representatives.
The elections were handled as routine organizational business at the start of the board's Jan. 7 meeting. No formal contest or roll-call vote record was read into the record beyond the chair's announcement of the ayes and the characterization of the result as unanimous.
The board moved on to other organizational items after the leadership votes.
