Accomack board accepts FEMA/VDEM hazard mitigation grant to elevate eight homes

Accomack County supervisors voted to accept a hazard mitigation grant awarded by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and FEMA to elevate eight homes out of the floodplain.
County Administrator Mike Mason told the board the original award — described in the staff briefing as approximately $1.7 million — funds elevation of eight houses and that the grant’s period of performance has been extended through Aug. 5, 2027, giving staff and AMPDC time to contact owners, complete title searches and carry out construction work. "Staff recommends the board of supervisors authorize the County Administrator to accept the grant," Mason said.
Mason said the AMPDC will be contracted to administer the grant on the county’s behalf and that the project is funded through federal and state sources (90% FEMA, 10% VDEM) with no required local match. Board members voted in favor of accepting the award by voice vote.
Officials noted that some owners have already expressed interest while others have not yet been contacted; staff will continue outreach, assess property eligibility and finalize the list of participating homeowners. The grant includes deadlines the county must meet; supervisors thanked AMPDC for its administration and support.
