Accomack supervisors accept $1.7 million FEMA HMGP award to elevate eight homes

The Accomack County Board of Supervisors voted to accept a $1.7 million Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) award from FEMA intended to elevate eight homes in the county and amended the FY 2026 budget accordingly.
County Administrator Mike Mason reminded the board that they previously authorized acceptance of the grant and explained that, because the award required a budget adjustment exceeding 1% of the adopted budget, a public hearing and a formal budget amendment were required under Virginia law. "Last month, the board authorized the county administrator to accept a $1,700,000 grant to elevate 8 houses in Accomack County from FEMA," Mason said.
With no public comments at the hearing, a motion to recognize the acceptance of HMGP grant FEMA-4512-DR-DN and to appropriate the funds was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff provided an informational handout at the meeting.
The action adds the HMGP-funded elevation projects to the county’s capital budget and directs staff to implement the grant according to FEMA and state requirements; the board’s vote authorized the budget action and formal acceptance of the award.
