The board approved a memorandum of understanding with Alabama Fire College to provide fire science coursework and hands-on demonstrations for 11th–12th graders; transportation and funding support from the college were noted.
The Tuscaloosa City Schools Board on Jan. 13 approved a memorandum of understanding with Alabama Fire College to establish a fire science pathway for district students.
Dr. Pope, presenting the item, said the MOU will support 11th- and 12th-grade students (and interested 10th graders) with classroom theory and hands-on learning at the Alabama Fire College campus, taught by an Alabama Fire College instructor. "This MOU is establishing our partnership between TCS and Alabama Fire College," Dr. Pope said. He added that the Alabama Fire College will provide funds for the program and that transportation arrangements are already being planned should the MOU be approved.
Board members asked whether the hands-on sessions would take place at the college or in district facilities; Dr. Pope said students will travel to the college for demonstrations and practical learning while practical instruction components will be aligned to the district schedule and held at GCTA.
Supporters on the board said the program could help recruit students into firefighting and emergency services careers and praised the pathway as an option for career-minded students.
The board approved the MOU by voice vote.
