Falls Church Council elects Letty Hardy mayor and Laura Downs vice mayor

The Falls Church City Council elected Letty Hardy mayor and Laura Downs vice mayor at its organizational meeting on Jan. 5.
Hardy won the mayoral roll-call by 4 votes to 3, defeating Councilmember Marybeth Connolly, who had also been nominated. Mayor Hardy thanked colleagues after the result was announced.
Marybeth Connolly’s nominator highlighted her long record in the city, saying Connolly “has resided in the city for 30 years, been an employee of the Falls Church City Public Schools for 20 years, and is now beginning her fourth term as a member of the city council.” Supporters argued rotation of the largely ceremonial mayoralty would broaden public engagement. One nominator summarized the office under the charter: “The nominal mayor has no greater say or authority than any other, and the role of mayor in the substance of the duties is limited to presiding over meetings and acting as the head of our city government for ceremonial purposes.”
After the mayoral vote, councilmembers nominated and elected Laura Downs as vice mayor using the same roll-call process. Downs thanked colleagues and said she would “do my best to really make sure that all voices of the council are considered and heard,” and to balance community feedback with data when making decisions.
What’s next: With Hardy and Downs installed, councilmembers took turns offering remarks about council priorities for the next two years, including fiscal discipline, affordable housing and regional collaboration.
