Mayor Melissa Hart read a proclamation during the opening of the Sept. 8, 2025 Village Council meeting declaring September 2025 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and presenting the proclamation to a local family.
The reading, delivered by staff (Kim) on the mayor's behalf while the family was present, recited national statistics and emphasized differences between childhood and adult cancers, the scarcity of pediatric-specific drugs and the emotional and financial toll on families. The proclamation stated, as read in the record, that "childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children," cited 2025 diagnosis and mortality figures presented in the text, and noted that childhood cancer research remains underfunded.
Mayor Hart and council members thanked the family for attending. The parents explained that their son, Gavin, was diagnosed with leukemia at about 2 1/2 years old, underwent a roughly 2 1/2-year treatment plan and is now cancer-free. Council members and the mayor encouraged community support for nonprofit groups the proclamation named as assisting families affected by childhood cancer.
