Several residents drew the council’s attention to a serious e‑bike crash and asked the village to consider steps to improve trail safety.
Speakers described a crash that required first responders to cut handlebars and left the injured person hospitalized for 24 days; one resident said she wants e‑bikes removed from village trails. Staff said state law currently constrains the village’s authority on trail bans but that the police chief and one or two officers will provide a presentation at the village’s off‑site February meeting to outline options, potential enforcement steps and unintended consequences.
Council members and staff also discussed exploring safety classes with the recreation commission and the Red Cross, piloting portable programs for parents and kids, increasing signage on trails and dedicating bike patrol resources when staffing allows. Staff said signage efforts are already being pursued and that patrolling would be prioritized as staffing permits.
No ordinance or formal regulatory change was proposed at the meeting; council framed the next steps as community education, enforcement options and a staff presentation in February.
