Sheriff tells commissioners AMR committed to meeting response standards; county approves ambulance contract amendment

Sheriff Curtis Johnson presented the annual contract amendment with American Medical Response (AMR) to continue ambulance services in areas of unincorporated Boulder County not otherwise served by municipal providers. Johnson said the contract is structured around response-time standards (not a set number of vehicles), and the county has a compliance committee to review AMR performance quarterly.
Johnson acknowledged community concerns about AMR's capacity following changes in providers in the City of Boulder but said AMR has told the sheriff's office it intends to honor the contract and meet response-time obligations. "So far, we have confidence that they intend to honor the contract and meet the needs of our community," Johnson said, adding that a 180-day cancellation clause and a planned 2027 RFP provide additional safeguards.
Commissioners asked whether the contract includes financial penalties for missed response standards; Johnson said he would need to review the five-year-old contract to confirm penalty provisions. The board voted to approve the contract amendment and instructed staff to monitor compliance closely and prepare contingency plans and a future RFP if needed.
