Finance committee forwards $139,237 taser purchase to council, to be paid over five years

The Amherst Finance Committee voted to forward Ordinance 82603 to the council with an emergency declaration, authorizing the safety service director to enter a contract to purchase tasers for the Amherst Police Department at a total cost not to exceed $139,237.14, payable in five annual installments of $27,847.46.
The mayor explained that officers previously shared three or four tasers on a shift but over the past decade officers came to have personal devices; he said the older units are no longer supported by the manufacturer and the new purchase will outfit officers, detectives and others who need a taser. "This will outfit all of our officers and everybody, you know, detectives and all that need a taser," the mayor said, and added the payment plan will allow the city to pay over five years.
A motion to take the ordinance to council as written with emergency passed 6–0. The ordinance, if approved by council, will authorize the contract and the five‑year payment schedule.
