The Nantucket Land Bank Commission approved a request from the local athletic association to hold a half-marathon on Oct. 11, saying the nonprofit event brings visitors and supports island youth athletics.
Jim Mann, treasurer of the athletic association, told commissioners the race sold out registration in August, that the association donated $30,000 to island youth athletic programs last year and that the group expects roughly 800 runners on a typical day while capping the field at about 1,100 for public-safety reasons. "We sold out in August... last year $30,000 to various island athletic, mostly youth athletic efforts," Mann said.
Commissioners asked about safety arrangements; Mann said the event uses four aid stations, coordinates with the fire and police departments, deploys about 75 volunteers and limits the field to keep medical risk manageable. A motion to approve the request was made on the record and seconded; the transcript records vocal assent during the roll call.
Separately, Neil offered to donate and install a stone post identifying the Land Bank’s public parking at a small lot discussed earlier in the meeting. Commissioners discussed sign wording and logo placement and moved to accept Neil’s donation.
