District 207 honors students for academics and athletics; historic 'Main Flyer' donated to Maine East

Maine Township High School District 207’s Board of Education opened its meeting with a series of student recognitions, honoring academic, musical and athletic achievements across Maine South, Maine East and Maine West.

Dr. Baba Huggins introduced Ally Sohierink of Maine South as the district’s February academic honoree, praising her coursework in advanced physics and mathematics and state recognition for a National History Day project on the environmental movement. Ally, who said she plans to pursue industrial engineering, told the board she had ‘‘faced significant medical issues’’ last year and credited her parents for their support: "You did not define success by grades, but by effort and well‑being," the presentation said, paraphrasing the student’s message.

At Maine East, Andrew Green was recognized for an intensive advanced‑course load, leadership in debate and a perfect ACT score; Andrew told the board he had been accepted at the University of Chicago and will study physics. At Maine West, Lawson Wetendorf was presented as a National Merit finalist with a flawless transcript, advanced coursework including multivariable calculus, and extensive extracurricular involvement.

The board also recognized multiple athletic achievements. Arabella Spandieri and Emerson de la Cruz were named first‑team All‑State in flag football, with Arabella invited to a Super Bowl‑week showcase; swimmer Sarah Juris — a multi‑year All‑State performer — confirmed a commitment to The Ohio State University. Cross‑country and football honorees were likewise recognized for state‑level performances.

In a separate presentation, Leonard (Len) Johnson described recovering pieces of the historic "Main Flyer" airplane from a boneyard in Arizona and donating them to the district. The district said the artifacts — including a cockpit section — will be incorporated into Maine East’s historical artifacts room and used in future school events; administrators said they will invite Mr. Johnson back when display plans are finalized. "Perseverance, for everybody out there, your students. Never give up," Len Johnson said during his remarks.

The recognitions concluded with the board inviting students and families to remain for the meeting or join a scheduled photo session outside.

The board will proceed to regular business, including committee updates and agenda items, later in the meeting.
