At a district event, the Sayville Union Free School District recognized multiple championship teams, individual county and state qualifiers, and honored a volunteer who helped secure a new ADA‑compliant pool chair for the district’s swim program.
SAYVILLE — The Sayville Union Free School District spent the early portion of its meeting recognizing athletic success across the district, honoring championship teams, individual county champions and volunteers who improved accessibility.
Dr. Brian, introduced in the transcript as the district’s athletic director, opened the athletics presentation and called attention to academic and athletic achievements across fall sports. “This was a very proud moment for our athletic program and our school community,” Dr. Brian said, noting the district again earned recognition as a New York State Public High School Athletic Association School of Distinction for scholar‑athlete performance.
The district honored six league championships — five of them undefeated — across sports including boys and girls cross country, boys golf, girls volleyball and football. The football team finished the season undefeated and was named Division III Suffolk County champion, Division III Long Island champion and ranked No. 1 in Class B statewide, the district said.
Individual student achievements were highlighted as well. The board and athletic staff recognized several Suffolk County champions and All‑State qualifiers, including Grace Collins for breaking the Stony Brook University pool record in the 100‑meter freestyle. Dozens of student athletes were called forward to receive citations and plaques; coaches received coach‑of‑the‑year mentions for league and county honors.
The district also recognized community volunteers. Stella O’Shea was credited with leading efforts to obtain three vendor quotes and secure a new ADA‑compliant pool chair so all students can participate in swim programming. Dr. Brian said the pool‑chair purchase was the result of community initiative and coordination with the business office.
The athletic program portion of the meeting concluded with a parade of champions planned for Main Street and thanks to town and county officials for presentations and proclamations.
What’s next: the board moved from the recognition program to its regular business meeting and vote session after the ceremony.
