Summary
BRSSD will pilot Innovamat and Illustrative Math in K–5 and Carnegie and Illustrative Math for grades 6–8 starting Jan. 26; teachers will be trained and publishers will provide onsite support during five weeks of piloting, with a recommendation expected by early June.
District staff outlined an accelerated timeline for a K–8 math adoption that will test multiple curricula in classrooms beginning Jan. 26.
An assistant superintendent said the adoption committee narrowed state‑approved options to two pilots for K–5 (Innovamat and Imagine Learning’s Illustrative Math) and two for grades 6–8 (Carnegie and Illustrative Math). Pilots will run for five weeks with in‑person publisher support, professional development for participating teachers, and parent nights to review materials before any purchase.
"We're aiming to make a recommendation by early June," the assistant superintendent said, noting the district must align any purchase to available funds and implementation timelines. Staff emphasized the pilots will evaluate pedagogical fit, cultural responsiveness, student engagement and the quality of teacher supports. The presentation also noted built‑in technology and differentiation tools — including AI‑driven supplemental supports — that publishers now offer for grouping students and identifying skill gaps.
Trustees asked about classroom logistics, assessment validity and how pilots would avoid leaving students behind in critical skills. The assistant superintendent said publishers will help map pilot content to the district scope and sequence and that an evaluation rubric is being finalized to measure classroom implementation and student engagement.
If trustees approve a recommendation after the pilot and evaluation, the selected curricula would be phased in for implementation in the 2026–27 school year, with continuing professional development during rollout.
