Vermont House member from Saint Albans resigns effective Jan. 16, 2026

A member of the Vermont House representing Saint Albans City and Saint Albans Town submitted a resignation letter read on the House floor on Jan. 14, 2026, saying the resignation is effective Jan. 16, 2026. The letter, read aloud by the clerk, said, "It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Saint Albans over the last 7 years," and noted that the member has "recently taken a new job as town manager of the town of Saint Albans" and welcomed a new child.

The departure was acknowledged by colleagues on the floor. The member from Poultney called the resignation a loss for the House Republican caucus, praised the departing member’s leadership and service and offered farewell wishes, saying the member will be "so greatly missed" and wished them "godspeed." The departing member addressed the chamber and thanked colleagues, saying, "It's been a pleasure."

The resignation letter as read included an identifying signature phrase that was difficult to parse in the reading; the clerk read what sounded like "Casey j Toof" following the resignation text. The House did not record further action on filling the vacancy during the session. No special election date or appointment procedure was provided in the reading.
