The Quakertown Community School District’s Student Activities and Athletics Committee voted Jan. 14 to send a proposal to the full board to formally sponsor girls flag football as a PIAA sport and to approve associated coaching stipends.
Athletics staff said the program ran as a club for the past two years with varsity and JV teams already participating, and that the district has budgeted one‑time equipment purchases (uniforms, flags, footballs) in this year’s budget. The athletic director recommended stipends "that would align here with our current district athletic pay scale," proposing a head coach stipend of $4,680.54 and a JV assistant stipend of $1,872.21; the presenter estimated a combined cost of $66,552.75 including anticipated postseason and longevity compensation.
"This past year, we ran both JV and varsity, and they were treated almost as if they were already our sport," the athletic representative said, noting teams had game workers, scoreboards and district support. Committee members asked whether middle‑school feeder teams exist (they do not at present) and how participation and longevity pay would affect future budget lines.
Committee members supported moving the stipend and program proposal to the full board for formal approval. The administration said funding for initial equipment purchases had already been included in this year’s budget and that ongoing stipend costs will be included in future budget considerations if the program expands.
The full board will consider the committee’s referral at an upcoming meeting. If approved, the district said it will follow PIAA calendar and postseason compensation rules in addition to district longevity and postseason pay policies.
