Summary
Recreation and aquatics staff reported modest gains last fiscal year: aquatic fitness participation rose about 5%, memberships increased 7%, and the learn-to-swim program had 1,202 participants (893 residents, 309 non-residents). Staff said the indoor pool reopens Monday after inspection.
Farmers Branch recreation and aquatics staff combined their end-of-year report and told the Parks & Recreation Board about participation increases and operational goals for 2026.
Ashley Flores, recreation manager, said the aquatics division’s achievements included a 5% increase in aquatic fitness participation compared with FY23–24 and a 7% increase in membership. She told the board the learn-to-swim program enrolled 1,202 participants last year, including 893 residents and 309 non-residents.
Dylan Gammon, the new aquatic supervisor, said the aquatic center completed its inspection and staff were finalizing pool preparations. "We're all good to go," Gammon said, and staff planned to open the pool Monday morning after completing final touches.
Board members asked how the temporary indoor pool closure affected participation; Flores said fewer patrons migrated to the recreation center, but dry-land fitness classes maintained regular attendance. The board also discussed cost recovery: staff reported the recreation center achieved roughly 107% cost recovery while aquatics operates at a loss due to higher chemical and staffing costs. Members noted they value the community benefits of aquatics programming even when it does not fully cover operating costs.
Staff listed 2026 goals including moving all rentals online, expanding social media presence, cross-training staff and continuing efforts to improve cost recovery without reducing community access.
The board recorded the motion to approve minutes and adjournment during the meeting’s routine business.
