Indio arts commission approves $50,000 RFP to fund restroom murals at three parks

The City of Indio Public Arts Commission voted Jan. 13 to approve a request for proposals authorizing staff to seek artists to paint murals on restroom facilities at three city parks.

Staff described the project as a single $50,000 allocation to cover murals at Jackson Avenue Park, Doctor Carryon Park and Miles Avenue Park. "The recommendation from staff is to review and approve the request for proposals for murals to be installed at the restroom facilities located within 3 parks," a staff member said during the presentation.

Commissioner [motion recorded as made by an unnamed commissioner] moved to approve the RFP and to authorize staff to circulate it; another commissioner seconded the motion. In roll-call voting recorded during the meeting, commissioners responded in the affirmative and the chair announced the motion carried.

The formal motion, as read into the record, authorized staff to circulate the RFP and proceed with selection and contract steps consistent with the Public Arts work plan for 2025–26. Staff told commissioners the $50,000 figure is total program funding rather than an amount per park.

Next steps: staff will circulate the RFP to solicit proposals from artists and return to the commission with submissions and recommended awards. The commission took no separate action on the distribution or award strategy at this meeting.
