Board sends two draft 2026–27 calendars back to committee to add Election Day closure

The Talbot County Board of Education received a first reading of two draft school calendars for 2026–27 at its Jan. 14 meeting and directed the calendar committee to revise both drafts to include closing schools on Election Day.
Dr. Einhorn presented the committee’s work and explained the constraints (COMAR requires 180 student days and negotiated agreements specify grading time and staff workdays). Draft A starts students Aug. 24 and ends June 8 (June 14 if snow days are used) and includes a longer spring break; Draft B would start earlier (Aug. 20) and end in early June with a shorter spring break and an April 23 closure. The committee had not included Election Day in the drafts but board members raised safety and logistical concerns about using schools as polling places.
Board members debated options including moving a spring-break day to add Nov. 3 as a day off; several members said closing on Election Day had precedent and would reduce safety/parking problems when schools are used as polling places. A motion was made and passed to send both calendars back to the calendar committee to include Election Day and return to the board for a second reading and vote at the next meeting.
Next steps: The calendar committee will prepare revised versions of calendars A and B that reflect the Election Day option and return to the board for a second reading and formal adoption process.
