Board reduces board‑approval threshold to $75K for first read of purchasing authority policy

The City Schools of Decatur Board of Education voted Jan. 13 to accept for first read revised purchasing‑authority language that lowers the board‑approval threshold for budgeted purchases to $75,000.
Chief of Staff Amanda Lynch explained that DJEA was brought forward for first read so it would align with proposed revisions to related policy DJE (Purchasing), which were approved for first read the previous month. "Specifically, the revisions reduced the threshold for board approval for purchases from budgeted funds from $100,000 to $75,000," Lynch said.
Board members asked procedural questions and compared neighboring districts’ thresholds (Buford and Marietta were cited during discussion as having lower thresholds), and staff clarified that approval under the revised policy would require notices in the board packet and identify the funding source for each contract.
A motion to accept DJEA for first read was made, seconded, discussed briefly, and approved unanimously. Lynch said both DJEA and DJE will be posted for public comment on the district’s policy portal (Simbly) and returned together for second read in February to avoid conflicting policies.
What’s next: DJEA and DJE will be available for public comment on the Simbly portal; staff will summarize public input and any proposed changes ahead of the February second‑read vote.
