Dinwiddie approves new fire and EMS insurance contract; general liability removed to avoid duplication

The Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on July 15 to authorize a contract with Watkins Insurance Agency to provide county fire and EMS insurance coverage.
Chief Kelsner told the board the county issued an RFP on June 5, received proposals from three vendors, and the selection committee identified Watkins Insurance Agency as the best offer. The recommended policy would cover property, portable equipment, auto, management liability, accident and sickness and would supplement volunteer workers' compensation coverage. Staff and the county administrator said the county will remove general-liability coverage from the Watkins policy because that coverage already exists through Vaycorp and would otherwise duplicate protection.
Board materials included a total premium figure, but the transcripted packet number was garbled in the meeting audio/text and could not be verified verbatim from the transcript; board members nevertheless approved the contract and the change to remove duplicate general-liability coverage. A roll-call vote recorded Doctor Moore, Mister Chavis, Missy Brown Bonner and Mister Lee voting aye.
Next steps: staff will finalize the contract language and implement the new policy with Watkins Insurance, ensuring the county's existing Vaycorp general-liability coverage remains primary where appropriate.
