Commission appropriates $415,098 to close funding gap on 10-unit airport hangar

The commission approved a request Jan. 13 to appropriate $415,098.34 from the Aeroplex Allocation Area Special Fund to cover the city’s reimbursable portion of a 10-unit airport hangar project.
Megan Erwin, chief of staff for the City of Elkhart, described the funding mix and said the project is about $1.8 million in total, with “approximately 1,300,000.0 of that of the $1,800,000 project is federal funds,” about $60,000 in state funds and roughly $45,000 in private funds from a benefitting hangar group. Erwin said the intent is that the TIF will only pay for non-reimbursable portions and that staff is coordinating with the controller’s office to ensure revenues are allocated to the correct accounts.
Commissioners voted by voice to appropriate the funds. One commissioner asked whether hangar lease proceeds would replenish the TIF; staff said they would confirm with the controller’s office and ensure proceeds go into the correct accounts.
