The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission voted Jan. 13 to approve the demolition of the former county courthouse and to appropriate $1,175,000 from the downtown allocation area to fund the project.
Staff told the commission that the Board of Works publicly bid the demolition consistent with the city's agreement with Elkhart County and that the recommended award is to C and A Excavating. Staff said Elkhart County will provide a $1,000,000 contribution that will be deposited into the downtown TIF fund; the TIF will cover the remaining $175,000. “Demolition is expected to be complete in April 2026,” staff said during the meeting.
A motion to approve the award and appropriation was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff said the city expects to bring an RFP for redevelopment of the site to the redevelopment commission in February or March.
