Superintendent Margaret Coates highlighted student leadership at Northeast Elementary, an invitation to legislators for a new high-school club, the Wind Ensemble’s selection for a state conference, and board service recognitions during the Owasso Public Schools meeting.
Superintendent Margaret Coates opened the report by celebrating returning students and staff after winter break and asked the board to recognize two Northeast Elementary fifth-graders, Preston Dodson and Blade Christie, who led the Pledge of Allegiance and were acknowledged for leadership at school. Coates introduced teachers and counselors from Northeast and noted the students ‘‘are larger than life’’ and serve as role models for others.
Coates announced the Owasso High School Wind Ensemble has been selected to perform at the Oklahoma Music Educators Conference in Tulsa and invited board members and the public to attend. She also described a newly formed student-led America Club that has invited state legislators—Sen. Prieto, Sen. Seifried and Rep. Norwood—to speak to students about the upcoming legislative session.
Coates closed by presenting service recognitions to board members, thanking them ‘‘on behalf of the Owasso community’’ for years of service and noting the district and community have supported $486,775,000 in bond proposals since 2003. The superintendent’s report also included brief program updates and a reminder about upcoming district events, including Edcamp and the spring musical.
The board received the report; no formal action was required. The meeting moved next to administrative and procurement items on the agenda.
