Highland Village completes local steps for Lake Lewisville paddling-trail segment; TPWD to help promote
Summary
Staff said Highland Village has completed TPWD requirements for its segment of the Lake Lewisville paddling trail; Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will supply kiosk designs, maps and online promotion, and staff said kiosk fabrication can be done in-house for about $2,500.
A parks presenter told the board that Highland Village has completed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department requirements for its Lake Lewisville paddling-trail segment and is ready to be listed as a put-in/take-out node on the state paddling-trail map. "We're the only agency in that group that's actually completed all the requirements for this paddling trail," the presenter said, noting that TPWD will provide kiosk designs, map production and cross-promotion on TPWD web pages.
Staff said kiosks and signs will be placed at designated put-in and take-out locations — Pilot Knoll, Marauder Park, Sunset Point/Lakeside Park and Copperas Branch Park — and that TPWD materials will include safety guidance, trail rules and interpretive information. An external quote for kiosks was near $5,000 each, but staff said the city can build durable metal kiosks in-house for about $2,500 and that the department will cover the small expense from operating funds; no board funding request was made.
Board members asked about safety, recommended clarifying that water levels can affect mapped distances, and discussed how the trail might coexist with motorboat traffic in busier summer months. Staff said they will request any additional guidance TPWD can provide on recommended paddling times and safety concerns and will coordinate with police and fire about access and emergency response.
