The State Board of Education voted Jan. 15 to place Wilkinson County School District into a district of transformation on the basis of a history of serious academic deficiencies, to abolish the districtas provided in statute, and to appoint an interim superintendent to lead the district during state intervention.
MDE staff told the board that Wilkinson(identified in the presentation as the sole district meeting three statutory criteria) has had consistent academic and financial problems: the district has experienced a six-year enrollment decline (from about 1,210 students in 2019 to 648 in the latest pull), has been rated F for two consecutive years, and has more than 50% of its schools designated "at risk."
