Christopher Collins was formally appointed mayor of the City of Stuart during the commission’s Dec. 8 reorganization, and Commissioner Sean Reid was selected as vice mayor.
The commission voted on the reorganization after interim city staff opened the item. Commissioner Giobi moved to appoint Collins as mayor and Commissioner Clark seconded; the motion passed on a roll call vote. The subsequent motion to name Reid vice mayor also passed on roll call.
The discussion before the votes centered on whether to adhere to the city’s traditional succession rotation — which some commissioners and residents argued would have left Commissioner Clark as vice mayor — or to prioritize what proponents called fresh leadership. Commissioner Rich urged following tradition because of the upcoming transition to a new city manager; Commissioner Giobi argued for new ideas and leadership. Resident speakers during public comment also urged following tradition and stressed experience at this time.
The appointments take effect immediately; commissioners noted the change will shape committee assignments and the commission’s internal organization going into 2026.
