Buchanan County School Board elects leadership, appoints clerk and committees

The Buchanan County School Board opened its Jan. 14 organizational meeting by electing board leadership, confirming committee assignments and approving routine governance items.
The board held nominations for chair and proceeded to a vote; the motion to appoint David Thornberry as chair carried by majority count, and members discussed passing the gavel to the new chair. The board also set the regular meeting cadence for the year (second Tuesday of each month) for continuity and retained the school board law firm at the same rate as the previous year.
In personnel-related organizational votes, the board appointed Tanya Cox as clerk and agreed to keep her salary at the same level as the previous year. The personnel slate of committee appointments announced by the chair included: Safety Committee (Mike Thompson); Budget Committee (Brian Looney, Ray Blankenship); Disciplinary Committee (Tommy Blankenship, Ray Blankenship, David Thornberry); Transportation Committee (Jack Compton, Angie McClanahan); and Personnel Committee (Tommy Blankenship, David Thornberry). These committee appointments were made under the chair's authority and approved by the board.
The board also adopted Robert's Rules of Order for conduct of meetings and set the board member salary and mileage policy to match the prior year. All motions on organizational items were carried in roll-call or voice votes unless otherwise noted.
The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026.
