Homer Glen honors veteran Lou Zemke by renaming Heritage Circle 'Zemke Way'

The Homer Glen Village Board on Jan. 6 approved a resolution designating Heritage Circle as the honorary Zemke Way in recognition of Lou Zemke's longtime service to veterans and the village.

Trustee Reinders introduced the item and described Zemke's role in establishing a local American Legion post and leading veterans' efforts. A statement from resident Beth Rogers read into the record said the renaming is "a visible reminder" that the community values leadership and service. Lou Zemke's family accepted the honor; his son Bill Samke told the board, "I can honestly say I never expected to see my name on the street sign." The board then voted by roll call, recording unanimous support among trustees present.

Mayor and staff said the designation reflects years of volunteer work by Zemke, including leadership on veterans' memorial projects. Trustees and public works staff noted the village will install the new street sign and that the veterans and parks committees had significant input into the memorial design.

The board held the recognition at the start of its meeting; family members, members of the American Legion, and other veterans were present. The village manager and public works director committed to installing the sign and moving forward with associated memorial efforts this year.
