Select Board approves most 2026 license renewals, issues violation letters for noncompliant businesses

At its Jan. 13 meeting the Town of Brookline Select Board approved the bulk of the town's 2026 license renewals and set a process for addressing businesses still out of compliance.
Licensing staff told the board this was the first year the town processed renewals entirely electronically, which improved oversight and identified compliance issues previously missed in a hybrid system. Staff described three categories for renewals: Category 1 (substantially compliant and recommended for omnibus approval through Dec. 31), Category 2 (substantially compliant but with outstanding items; staff recommended conditional extensions through Feb. 25 and follow-up at the licensing panel if necessary), and Category 3 (noncompliant; staff will issue violation letters and refer unresolved matters to a hearing).
The board approved Category 1 licenses in an omnibus vote (roll call recorded as ayes) that covered secondhand motor, secondhand articles and antiques, innholder and lodging-house licenses, alcohol licenses and common victualler/entertainment/outdoor dining permits. For Category 2, staff said outstanding items were typically missing paperwork such as workers' compensation certificates or pending departmental clearances (for example, fire inspection sign-offs). The board conditionally approved Category 2 licensees and instructed staff to extend those licenses through Feb. 25 while departments and businesses complete outstanding items. Staff said Category 3 contains one or two establishments where health has required fixes; those businesses will receive violation letters and, if they do not correct deficiencies, the licensing panel hearing process will begin.
Votes were recorded by roll call and the board members present voted aye on the approvals and conditional approvals. Staff said overall the number of closures is slightly higher than last year but that new applicants are also entering the market.
The board did not take disciplinary action tonight; any nonrenewals or discipline would be scheduled for a future licensing panel hearing.
