Fairfax roundtable highlights emerging AI coalition and local hiring gains

Peter Cann, chief executive of Enable Intelligence, said his company has rapidly expanded after winning work with the National Geospatial‑Intelligence Agency and "added another 120 employees just in the last 4 weeks," many in entry‑level AI positions that rely on local training pipelines. "It's nice to be able to share this around this time of year, some good news about how AI is adding jobs to the economy as well," he said.
Cheryl Menage, president of TANX and a coalition volunteer, said the group aims to create a regional brand for AI, accelerate commercialization and set measurable outcomes such as startup formation, credentialed workforce pathways, regional data‑sharing collaboratives and responsible AI standards. She described plans for an "AI Action Summit," seed funding for the event and work with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission to manage an RFP and consultant selection to develop a roadmap and KPIs.
Why it matters: Local leaders said coordinating across industry, government and universities could help Northern Virginia capture more investment and prepare a broader workforce for AI jobs, but they also noted legal and ethical questions and the need for measurable outcomes rather than a one‑day convening.
Participants flagged talent pipelines from area institutions (Northern Virginia Community College, George Mason University) and county workforce programs (TalentUp) as key to staffing growth. County Executive Brian Hill said Fairfax is pursuing "bespoke AI solutions for government and resident specific use cases built with ethics." Several employers and education leaders volunteered to participate in coalition planning.
Next steps: Coalition organizers said they will solicit a consultant through NVRC and seek partners to develop implementation goals and KPIs; organizers also asked the board and meeting participants for participation and leadership in a summit likely planned for late next year.
