The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Jan. 13 to pilot a streamlined approach that allows Cal Fire personnel and county firefighters to undertake specified non‑technical upkeep, maintenance and minor repairs at county fire facilities.
Supporters said the pilot would reduce delays and high administrative soft costs that occur when crews must wait for distant county contractors or staff to perform small repairs. John Clark of Local 281 said the change could keep facilities safer and reduce overall costs.
Supervisors and the chair clarified the scope: the amendment explicitly excludes technical electrical or plumbing work that should be handled by tradespeople and directs the County Administrative Officer to consult with impacted labor groups before implementation. The motion passed unanimously; the board directed staff to monitor implementation and report back.
